Saturday May 16 was Barcamp Mobile and let me tell you it was spectacular! It was small and humble but there was definitely good diverse amout of talented people that were there.
First off the pre-camp dinner was at Wings Sports Grill and was sponsered by Automattic and it was a great turnout for the free wings! If you did get to attend barcamp, you also recieved one free year of hosting and a domain name with Dreamhost who also provided snacks. Everyone started arriving around 8:00 Saturday morning to enjoy an excellent breakfast that Satori Sound Coffee House went out of their way to provide us. After breakfast there was a diverse set of sessions that covered hacking and security, social media and networking, and programming and design.
There was one thing that I really felt made this barcamp something special and went on to prove the power of team work. All of barcamp pooled their resources and canceled some sessions to build a social meda package with a website and donated it to Satori Sound Coffee. In less than 3 hours several teams completed a majority of this project and soon it will be open source to the world for the world to work on. You can visit the mostly complete website here.
By the end of the day this 30 man group decided it was time to grow the Mobile tech commuinity so they also established the Mobile Bay Tech Alliance that day which is supposed to be similar to Birmingham’s TechBirmingham. As you can see a lot of work went into that one barcamp for such a small group! I enjoyed the community so much that we had to make another trip for the tweetup on the following weekend!
