Event: New Media Atlanta

Date: Friday, September 25, 2009

Summary: A social media for business conference highlighted by the fact that Chris Brogan is awesome.

Here is a brief summary of what I got out of each session.(I wasnt in all sessions)

Social Media Is Here To Stay – Jeff Turner

The ants guy, as some started to call him, had a view of social media that I had never heard before. The most important thing learned from this session is that social media is self organizing. Jeff gave an example of by explaining that social media software in beta changes with time. Its works to correct itself through it’s own users. That is the beauty of social media.

Engagement Is The New Marketing Metric – Brent Leary

Brent Leary is the guy I will always remember as the social media food guy. He talked about how ordering pizza on the dominos website shows the status of your order from creation to delivery. Brent specifically remembered that it said “Jessica put your pizza in the oven”. So when he went to pick it ip, he curiously asked “where is Jessica? I want to thank here for her role in the making of my pizza”. By this example, I know Dominos is doing the right thing by personalizing their brand with the help of social media.

How a Traditional Media Company uses New Media Tactics – Seth Miller

The only thing I got out of this session was that tbs and tnt are on twitter.

Let’s Make Mondays Less Terrible – Jonathan Baker

“Weekends are overrated. It’s not about living for the weekend, but about enjoying every day as much as you can!” Jonathan said as he started his beer-tastic session. He and a few friends started brewing beer on Monday nights  to get to know each other better. Who knew it would become such an epic brewery!? This session was definitely a crowd favorite. I don’t even drink beer but because of Jonathan’s story and enthusiasm I’m definitely try theirs! Get the full story on their site at http://mondaynightbrewery.com

Social Media As A Cornerstone Of Brand Building – Toby Bloomberg

Toby takes a traditional media approach to social media. I like how to she emphasized that people are the core of it all. (She used one of my friends twitter avatar in her presentation!)

Cultural Changes Required To Embrace Social Media – Chris Brogan

This was my favorite session of the day. After listening to mostly the same social media stuff that I have been hearing about forever, Chris Brogan took the stage. Let me tell you this guy is real. No slides, no intro music, just a small note pad. The first thing he did was to tell everyone to stand up and stretch. This guy really cares about people! Chris is also not afraid of what people think of him either. He put backnoise(an anonymous snarking site) up on the wall while speaking. I bought his book as soon as I got back to my city! Chris is also a very funny guy. He kayne’d @williejackson earlier in the day. It was hilarious! He walked up to @williejackson and said “hey, imma let your finish but that panel is the best ever!” LOL  I understand why he is where he is today. He is real and cares about people. I really didnt know who he was before the conference but after meeting him I will now read his blog daily!

Did you like my thoughts on the conference? Leave some feedback in the comments below!
